You've reached the webpage of Kevin Kane, director of the ISU Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Support and Research Facility. My current responsibilities include university-wide and external GIS coordination; GIS, natural resources, and higher education research; graduate student mentoring; and various information technology and university service projects. I've been at Iowa State since February, 1997.

As the director of the GIS Facility I'm responsible for providing high level GIS research and teaching laboratories and resources to students, faculty and staff as well as to provide GIS consultation, collaboration, education and outreach across Iowa State University colleges and departments as well as coordination with GIS professionals and projects across the state of Iowa. We currently have a staff of ten highly competent GIS professionals and students doing a wide variety of projects in conjunction with numerous ISU programs as well as many projects outside of ISU.

I also serve as an adjunct assistant professor in the department of Landscape Architecture (LA) at ISU. I have taught landscape modeling and spatial analysis with Paul Anderson, GIS workshops for faculty, graduate students, and public agencies, and mentor graduate students working with natural resources and GIS in their degree programs and with the university GIS Certificate. I serve as a research collaborator in the Dept. of Natural Resource Ecology and Management co-directing the aquatic and terrestrial Gap Analysis projects.

I recieved my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in 2007 with Dr. John Schuh serving as my advisor. My dissertation topic, "University academic professional staff: Augmenting traditional faculty teaching, advising, and research roles" focused on work roles and policies across an organization. I have also studied water and fisheries resources as a graduate student with Dr. Clay Pierce. I am a past president of the Professional and Scientific Council at ISU and have worked in many service leadership roles across the university, within the state of Iowa, and nationally. I am currently leading the ITS Strategic Planning process after working on the steering committee for the new Iowa State University 2010-15 Strategic Plan.

In 1986 I completed my Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) degree after bachelor's degrees in Landscape Architecture and Outdoor Recreation Planning at ISU in 1982. My master's work in LA focused on research on GIS, remote sensing, and natural resources, and outdoor recreation with Paul Anderson as my advisor. In 1985 I joined the Iowa Department of Natural Resources working as the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation (SCORP) planner then as the DNR's GIS Coordinator and the department's continuous quality improvement coordinator. During that time I also taught introductory and advanced GIS courses as an adjunct faculty member in the Geography and Geology department at Drake University in Des Moines from 1993-98.

If I can help answer any questions for you, please drop me an email at kkane@iastate.edu.
