COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  We had an outstanding effort by our entire squad, both varsity and J.V.  Mikaela ran a very aggressive race against Katie Price of Iowa Falls and Macaela Mennen of Hampton-Dumont.  Mikaela drove the pace hard for the first mile and a quarter at which point she was able to surge and separate from both competitors.  She is our first individual girls champion since Jana Peterson completed an undefeated senior season as Class 2A state champion. Breanne Wagner and Sarah Perin did a great job to earn all conference honors.  Mikaela and Sarah earned their 2nd all conference honors and Breanne earned all conference for the first time.  Caitlyn Finucan and Erin Hunt did an excellent job of running together and raced side by side all through the chute. Their performances were significantly better than a week ago. Paige and Jewel gave us solid efforts.  This was our 5th conference title in the last 6 years. Our J.V. led things off in fine fashion by sweeping the top 3 spots and placing 5 in the top 6.  Most of the squad’s performances showed improvement, in many cases significantly from last Thursday’s meet on the same course.  Bailey Bergman ran out front from the start and pushed the pace the entire way.  Bailey Anderson had one of her better efforts of the year and Amanda Hicok battled hard for 3rd.  Alicia Long and Kelsey Griffith had, by far, their best races of the year to place 5th and 6th.  Overall, it was fine accomplishment and should give us great momentum going into a tough Atlantic district next week.

COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  I was extremely proud of the way our team responded to a very adverse situation that arose at the meet.  Following our arrival, we learned of the suspension of our #1 and #7 varsity runners due to violations of our school attendance policy.  As a result, we moved Adam Klein and Mason Hedeen to the varsity and they responded with their best races of the year.  I was very pleased by the leadership shown by junior Ben Lambert and Seniors Ethan Barnes and Brandon Hicok as they focused the team’s preparation and gave quality efforts throughout the race.  Ben raced the top two runners throughout the first mile and battled to finish 4th, the same position as last year.  Ethan earned his first all conference award.  Ben and Ethan have been two people who we could count on all season and it is nice to see them reap the rewards of their hard work.  Brandon Hicok battled but was unable to stay up with the top 10.  We hope he can continue to improve as we move toward districts.  Freshman Alex Lamp set a new personal record in finishing as our #4 runner and Matt Severe did a great job of competing to finish as our #5.  As a team, the loss of the two varsity runners realistically only moved us one position lower than what we would have finished.  Algona and Eagle Grove both ran fantastic races and deserve tremendous credit for their performances.  On the J.V. side, nearly every runner set new personal records, in some case, by 1½-2 minutes. Hopefully all of our squad members will make good choices so that we can achieve two of our season’s goals of winning district and qualifying for state.
