COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  We are very pleased to be headed to state for the 11th consecutive year.  It is a credit to the team that the battled through a difficult race in order to get qualified.  This was not our best race but we still were able to get the job done.  The course was by far the most demanding we have run on in a number of years.  We were a bit tentative in the first half of the race, partially due to my recommendation to not push to opening half mile too hard.  When it came down to crunch time the final half mile we were able to rally and move forward enough to get qualified.  Ben Lambert had a fine race to earn all district honors.  He was very strong in the final 2/3 of the race.  Our usual leader, Jesse Ogg, stitched up badly and had to battle throughout in order to avoid dropping well back.  Our 3-5 runners stayed close together which was the difference between being able to go to state and staying home.  It was our #5 being in the 20’s vs. Glenwood and Shenandoah’s being in the 50’s that swung things in our favor.  Zach Turner did a great job of stepping forward as our #6 and broke the tie for 2nd in our favor.  Freshman Matt Severe had a difficult race due to significant knee pain that showed up shortly after the start of the race.  He still hung in there and completed his effort on behalf of the team.  We will now compete at the state meet in Ft. Dodge at Kennedy Park on Saturday October 28th.  The boys race will begin at 12:30.

COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  We ran a very fine team race and it was our ability to have all five of our scoring runners within a 1:16 of each other that made the difference and allowed us to head for state for the 2nd time in 3 years.  This marks the 3rd time in our program’s history in which both the boys and girls squads have attended the same state meet.  The first came in 1991 and the second in 2004.  Mikaela Pruismann stepped forward early in the race and very doggedly fought for her all district medal.  Senior Emily Long persevered through her late season foot problems to finish 12th against a deep field.  Breanna Wagner had her best race of the year in moving forward to be our #3.  Sarah Perin fought hard through a difficult race as our #4.  Sophomore Paige Bonjour had one of her best races of the year to move into our final scoring position and secure our berth at the state meet.  Ashley Mallinger had her finest race of the year as our #6 and Amanda Hicok was very strong over the final 3rd of the race to finish in the top 50.  We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to compete at state given that 5 out of the 7 runners are freshmen and another is a sophomore.  We hope to have a great experience on which to build for the future. The girls will compete at the state meet at Ft. Dodge at Kennedy Park on Saturday October 28th at 12:00.
