COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  It was a great team battle between ourselves and Iowa Falls-Alden.  This was our best team effort of the season.  We narrowed the gap from 1st-6th to its smallest margin of the year.  In particular, our top 4 runners ran very well as a pack.  Becky Perin and Ashley Hanson had their best races of the year as well.  To Iowa Falls’ credit, they were able to beat us when we ran our best.  It took an exceptional effort to defeat us considering we had four all conference runners.  Kelsey Tompkins once again did a great job of leading us.  Emily Long and freshman Paige Bonjour continue to be impressively consistent.  Shannon Kane accomplished a major individual goal by earning her 4th all conference honor.  Very few individuals over the history of the conference can make claim to that accomplishment.  Libby McMurray battled tough in spite of a continuing leg problem.  While it is very disappointing for our senior girls to not earn their 4th consecutive conference title, they know that they ran well and were simply beaten by a team that was better that day.  On the J.V. side, Jessie Severson continues a late season surge and earned a varsity position at district with her 2nd consecutive J.V. conference victory.  Our entire J.V. crew ran very well as we had 5 in the top 10 plus the 11th place finisher.  All the girls had one of their best races of the year.  Libby McMurray and Elizabeth Johnson will serve as alternates to our varsity as we prepare for district.

COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  Our boys ran a very solid race against a strong effort by Eagle Grove.  We had to overcome some adversity in the race as usual top 4 performer Jesse Ogg stitched up and fell back during the competition.  To his credit, he hung on to finish in front of Eagle Grove’s #5 runner and added points to their total. Aaron Bieker did a nice job of covering by staying tight with Ben Lambert.  Drew Hunt challenged Eagle Grove’s #5 runner early as I had asked him to do, before falling back.  At the front of the race, Chris Wardell dominated from start to finish as expected and stayed very much within himself as he steadily increased his lead.  It was a nice reward for Chris after finishing runner-up to Tony Fischels a year ago.  Senior Nick Barnes ran a very gutsy race as he battled Eagle Grove’s top 3.  After finishing 12th a year ago, earning all conference status was a major goal for Nick and his ability to break up Eagle’s lead 3 was very important to our success.  Alex Flege also had a very good race to earn his first all conference award.  Ben Lambert had quite a duel to the line with Eagle Grove’s #4 runner before being nipped.  Cole Hippen did a great job in leading our J.V.  Brandon Hicok had his best race of his career.  As a result, they will be our alternates for district.  The remainder of our J.V. ran very well.

COACH LAMBERT’S AND COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  Our middle schoolers capped off their school sponsored season with far and away their best performance of the year.  The vast majority of our runners had their personal best, in some cases by several minutes.  We are extremely proud of how far these athletes have come and how well they represented Webster City.  Individually, Matt Severe, Austin Elm and Andrew Turpin all had great races against a high quality field.  The remainder of our boys line-up had incredible personal records.  On the girls side, Mikaela Pruismann dominated the race but we also had four other runners in the top 10.  To have five all conference middle school girls is tremendous.  Our girls didn’t stop there.  Our team made up half of the top 25.  Had this meet been scored, our girls would have easily won.  A few of our squad members plan to compete at the Iowa Association of Track Coaches Statewide Middle School Championship on Saturday at Saydel.
