COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  Our girls did a great job against a high quality field.  Spirit Lake was ranked 9th in the latest poll.  Esterville was ranked 8th and Spencer had beaten us at the Kuemper meet.  Forest City defeated Ft. Dodge Public at the Humboldt meet and finished 4th in a 4A meet at Mason City.  We clearly showed improvement as a team.  Kelsey Tompkins continues an exceptionally strong senior season.  I was particularly pleased with the aggressive running of Emily Long and Paige Bonjour.  Shannon Kane battled tough despite having some sore arches.  Ashley Hanson had a break through race running in our 5th position.  Becky Perin did a great job as our #6 runner breaking the tie in our favor over the Spirit Lake #6 runner who finished two places behind her.  Libby McMurray also had a stronger effort.  On the J.V. side, Elizabeth Johnson had a fantastic performance to finish 2nd.  Emily Sewick continues to show improvement and Kaeleen Jenkins is returning to the front of our J.V. after battling illness.  We will now face a large and very strong field at Eldora on Saturday which will include conference rival Iowa Falls.  The meet begins at 9:30 a.m.

COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  I was exceptionally proud of our team for the way they responded to a potentially negative situation.  We ran with great determination and we were clearly out to prove ourselves to be a good team.  We ran our tightest pack of the season and all seven of our varsity competitors, as well as the majority of our J.V., set new personal records.  Charles City is currently ranked 9th and Spirit Lake is ranked 5th.  For us to defeat Spirit Lake and battle conference foe and #4 ranked in 2A Eagle Grove as well as defeat Spencer who had beaten us at Kuemper, is a real credit to the determination of our boys.  Given that our former #1 runner has transferred to Humboldt and will begin competition for the wildcats next week, we have clearly gone beyond the improvement that I expected or could have hoped for.  We remain a force to be reckoned with in the conference and in the district.  Nick Barnes in his first race of the season led us with a strong 11th place finish against a field which featured a number of the areas top performers.  Our entire scoring pack stayed together through 2 miles.  Freshman Ben Lambert had a break through race setting a new personal record by 30 seconds.  Jesse Ogg stayed close and junior Aaron Bieker set a new personal record by over 1 minute.  Junior Alex Flege was near the front of our pack until encountering a side stitch.  He still hung in as our #5 and allowed us to score well as a team.  Drew Hunt and Peter Odegaard set huge new personal records.  Cole Hippen ran very well in the J.V. race and earned a varsity position in the upcoming race at  Eldora.  A number of our J.V. athletes had their best races of the year.

COACH LAMBERT’S AND COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  Our middle school athletes continue their impressive improvements over their beginning efforts of the season.  Nearly every runner showed dramatic new personal records against a very high caliber of competition from Iowa and Minnesota.  On the boys side, Matt Severe continues and impressive string of top 10 performances and Austin Elm radically improved, especially over his last mile.  On the girls side, Mikaela Pruisman and Ashley Mallinger continue to lead our pack but we were particularly pleased with efforts of Sarah Perin and Lacy Hadaway as well as the majority of our girls line-up.  The level of improvement is amazing and is a real credit to the hard work and determination of all of our athletes.  We will next compete in our home middle school invite at Brewer Creek on Monday night at 5:00 p.m.
