COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  This was far and away the toughest field we have faced and probably will face prior to district and hopefully state.  We ran an okay race but I would have liked to have seen us step up a bit more aggressively to this level of competition.  We had broader gaps in our scoring runners than I would like to see.  We will now have a week to work on it prior to our meet at Algona.  The meet featured class 4A #4 and #11 ranked Urbandale and Marshalltown along with 3A #4, #8 and #10 ranked Harlan, Spencer and Denison.  As such, a close 6th place finish behind Spencer and Denison is respectable although I believe we are capable of beating those two teams.  Harlan clearly is a dominant force in 3A.  For our team, Kelsey Tompkins capped off a good week by finishing 16th against a field which featured 6 of the state’s top ranked 4A and 3A individuals.  Paige Bonjour and Emily Long also had solid performances in our 2nd and 3rd positions.  Our next 3 runners came in fairly close together but if we hope to achieve our goals, they will have to move toward our front group.  Ashley Hanson and Jessi Severson had excellent races for our J.V.

COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  Our boys team continues to make progress.  This was a good quality field as Marshalltown is rightfully the #1 ranked 4A school.  Shenandoah and Atlantic are two of the best 3A schools in southwest Iowa.  Spencer is currently ranked 10th in class 3A.  Thomas Jefferson is the best 4A school in southwest Iowa and Urbandale finished 3rd in a large 4A meet in Des Moines earlier in the week.  So for us to be ahead of Urbandale and Spencer and in the hunt for Atlantic and Shenandoah is a clear indicator of the progress we are making.  Chris Wardell had an exceptional race as he was beaten by #1 ranked Stephen Dak and #7 ranked Corbin Miller of Marshalltown.  Chris was well ahead of the remaining Marshalltown pack which finished sequentially behind him.  Jesse Ogg and Alex Flege had fine races but the biggest improvement of the meet was for Aaron Bieker who in his first varsity race moved to our #4 position.  Ben Lambert rounded out a fairly close scoring pack.  With senior Nick Barnes scheduled to rejoin our varsity squad at Algona, we now have the type of depth it takes to challenge top teams.  On the J.V. side, Peter Odegaard and Chris Gordon had highly successful opening races to their cross country careers.
